Met Gala: jenni's picks
It's the time of year again when we all love to sit by and judge everyone's outfit while we eat chocolate in bed. Yes, it was the Met Gala yesterday and this year's theme was 'Heavenly bodies: Fashion and the Catholic church'. So of course, I thought I'd take the opportunity to do a round-up of the good, the bad and the ugly. Being the optimist that I am, let's start with the good. Or in some cases, truly magnificent. Ariana Grande, Blake Lively and Gigi Hadid take top spot as far as I'm concerned; their gowns were beautiful, regal and very obviously inspired by catholicism. Of course Rosie Huntington-Whitely looked like an angel (but then she always does) and Rihanna once again slayed the Met Gala by throwing her all in to the theme for another year running. Jasmine Sanders not only wore a beautiful dress, but she also did an elaborate floral hair crown and JLo was flashing all the rocks that she got in this heavily embellished dress. Ruby rose wore (funnily enough) ruby and stuck to the theme with a religious sash, while Amanda Seyfried looked every bit the goddess in chartreuse yellow.
There were quite a few people who deserve a nod for looking beautiful, although they don't make it on to the real best dressed list because they seemed to disregard the theme a little. I'm all for self-championing and Donatella Versace looked beautiful in a gold and navy outfit of her own creation while Deepika Padukone looked like a hollywood starlet (beautiful but not exactly holy). Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn both looked gorgeous in slinky gowns but even an all-white-outfit didn't exactly scream "heavenly". Amal Clooney looked amazing in something a bit different; a trouser and skirt combo, but again she failed to capture the religious theme while Hailey Baldwin looked more like a Disney princess than a catholic symbol (albeit a gorgeous one).
And then there are of course those who just completely missed the mark. Although Sarah Jessica Parker and Katy Perry may have undeniably given the theme a good shot, their outfits are almost offensive to the eyes. Meanwhile, Alicia Quarles and Mindy Kaling both resemble something in the region of a marshmellow; they've gone for completely unflattering gowns and other than both dresses being white, I can't see how it's connected to the theme whatsoever. And Zoe Kravitz and Kylie Jenner not only ignored the theme entirely, but Zoe turned up in what looks like a cheap net curtain and Kylie wore an unflatteringly plain dress and some strange eyewear. It's a no from me this year ladies.
Of course I had to give the men a little mention too, although it really is a little mention because most of them just turned up in the same black tux they always wear (looking at you Jonah Hill). Of the few that actually made the effort though, I thought Darren Criss' embellished jacket was incredible and Chadwick Boseman really honed the theme in his white ensemble. Donald Glover looked slick and stylish while still giving a nod to the regal theme with some embellishing, while Jared Leto went all out in a full catholic get-up, complete with Jesus hair and beard!
