The Grammys vs The Baftas
It's been nearly a year since my last best and worst dressed blogpost and I thought that seeing as award season is upon us, I'd take the opportunity to see who does it better, the Brits or the Americans. It's time for The Baftas vs The Grammys. I have no idea who won any of the awards or even who was nominated but what really matters is what goes on on the red carpet! All of my favourites were sparkle filled and dripping in sequins as you can see. Katy Perry looked absolutely beautiful in a silver Zuhair Murad gown and she debuted her new lilac bob too which I love (she is a queen). I'm not normally a Jessie J fan, I don't know why but I never really like what she wears and I'm not a fan of her music but she killed it last night! The detail of her Ralph & Russo dress reminded me of an Elie Saab (one of my favourite designers) and I love the sheer panels. Lady Gaga's gotten tame! Normally one to grace the red carpet in a dress made of meat or a hat made of hair, her mermaid style Brandon Maxwell dress was very un-her-like. But still beautiful though! I love a thigh high split. Kat Graham isn't usually a big name on the red carpet (although she is amazing in the vampire diaries) but she wowed in this Yanina couture dress with a beautiful flower print and sheer skirt. Kylie Jenner might not have been on the red carpet but she looked incredible at the GQ and Giorgio Armani after-party; her ivory Steven Khalil dress is such a beautiful shape and she looked gorgeous in it!
The worst dressed lists are always so fun to look through! Rihanna has definitely split the public on last nights Giambattista Valli dress; half think she looked like a true princess and the other half thought she looked more like one of those dolls you put on top of a roll of toilet paper. I fall into the latter category - I thought she looked foul. Madonna on the other hand, went with too little fabric rather than too much. Her Givenchy outfit left little to the imagination which is just a bit embarrassing for a woman her age - very unclassy. Meghan Trainors dress itself wasn't that bad; it just really didn't flatter her shape whatsoever and she really didn't look nice in it. As for Joy Villa, she topped the worst-and-most-ridiculous-dressed list for the whole night. I think she probably just left the house naked, passed a construction site on the way and made an impromptu dress out of the orange fencing. Charlie XCX tried to make an androgynous statement in this Moschino tuxedo but she just ended up looking a bit odd - not to mention the random fur wrap. Ciara is another one who's splitting the vote; I fall into the category that thinks her dress was a bit weird and not very flattering. Too many ruffles and not enough colour as far as I'm concerned.
Onto another continent, back to blighty and to the Baftas, where the Redmayne's were definitely the ones to watch. Not only did Eddie win best actor for his role in The theory of everything, but his wife Hannah Bagshawe definitely topped the best dressed list. I have an unparalleled sense for spotting a Valentino - I noticed this one straight away and of course I fell in love. Embellishment, sequins, and a cute collar all get a gold star from me. From another of my favourite designers was the dress Olivia Grant was wearing; this gorgeous dusky pink Jenny Packham dress really flattered her and looked good with her skintone. Laura Haddock was the belle of the ball in this Ashli studio couture dress and in true princess style she had the perfect prince charming on her arm in the form of her husband Sam Claflin (probably one of the best looking British actors of right now). I wasn't a fan of Kara Tointon's huge blow dry but her Julien Macdonald dress made up for it seeing as it was so beautiful. Laura Bailey went for simple and chic in this Emilia Wickstead dress and definitely pulled it off (I love the high collar). I also really love the neckline of Edith Bowman's Luisa Beccaria dress and the lace fabric worked well with the rich blue colour.
Like most things, the American's did it bigger and better than us - their worst dressed list was much more eccentric. Never the less we still had some shockers. I don't think I've ever seen Claudia Winkleman look nice even once - her makeup and clothes are always shocking and this puffy unflattering black vintage dress was no exception. The less said about Mica Levi's PU raincoat and creepers the better - I know England has a reputation for bad weather but come on. When I first saw Hofit Golan's dress I thought the photo had been censored but it turns out that random gold star is actually meant to be there. Monica Bellucci was unfortunately channelling Morticia Addams in this long black Alaia gown and it didn't help that she was stood next to Lea Seydoux who looked amazing in a flowing yellow dress. Patricia Arquette wore a very plain and unflattering burgundy dress and Imelda Staunton looked frumpy rather than mermaid in her Vivienne Westwood gown.
For me though, the winner across both continents and both events was definitely Taylor Swift. She absolutely slayed in this turquoise Elie Saab dress with split front and double straps! Although that's hardly surprising because for the last 4 years running she's popped up on all the best dressed lists for her immaculate femininity and classy outfits. People may criticise her but her music has always been my guilty pleasure and she dresses like a princess so as far as I'm concerned, she was the queen of the Grammys.
