Mermaid dreaming
Another hot trend for SS14. I have two great fictional female role models in life; Blair Waldorf and the Disney princesses. So seeing as Ariel is a Disney princess, you can see why I love the mermaid trend so much. It's made up of blue's and greens, shimmery fabric and lots and lots of sequins! Although it's not the most wearable of styles and definitely not for a day-to-day occasion, the pieces are so beautiful and will really stun for a special occasion or night out. I've selected a few of my favourite mermaid pieces and tried to include some subtle pieces and some all-out living-in-the-ocean pieces. As always I'll go from left-to-right, top-to-bottom.
1. Sequin cutaway crop top £35 from Topshop
I love the racer-style sleeves of this top and it's a piece that could be toned down with black skirt or trousers. The mix of purple and green tones makes it the perfect mermaid piece and the black edging adds some class. It is expensive, as a lot of the mermaid pieces are, but the detail in the sequin work is so beautiful and I'd say it's definitely worth the money.
2. Irridescent mermaid pencil skirt £38 from Topshop
This is a piece that could easily be worn from day-to-day; just tone it down with a monochrome slogan tee or black cami. But the midi pencil style mixed with the shimmery silver and green colours mocks a mermaid tail perfectly without looking like something out of a fancy dress box and the high waisted style makes it really flattering.
3. Gabby sequin plunge back dress £58 from Motel
I do tend to always feature the same shops (Topshop, river island, missguided, new look etc.) but that's because they're my favourites and it's where I seem to buy all my clothes, so I wanted to try and include some other shops in this post. So when I found this dress on the Motel website I knew I couldn't write a mermaid blogpost without featuring it. The purple and green all-over sequins look gorgeous and I'm always a fan of long-sleeved bodycon dresses. The dropped back is a chic look and the green colour will carry you through into the winter party season; making it definitely worth the price!
4. Blue sequin mini skirt £60 from Topshop
Okay so this piece is way too expensive for a skirt for me to justify buying it personally, but it's so pretty I just love to look at it. I love the colour and the sequin work is amazing; plus it's one half of a two-piece, which as you should know, is always a points-scorer with me. If anyone who a) has a trust-fund b) has recently robbed a jewellery store or c) has just won the euro millions, would like to buy this skirt then I'd love for you to tell me what you think of it.
5. Mermaid scale scuba leggings £25 from Topshop
Back into normal-people budget with a piece that could be worked into your everyday wardrobe really easily. I'm not fan of leggings and am proud to say I don't own a black pair, but this pair might just be the game-changer. The shell print and blues and silvers are really cute and the lack of sequins means you can wear them without making such a loud statement. Just add a white cami or bralet (depending on the occasion) and white heels and you're good to go.
6. Sequin bralet £38 from Topshop
Again, quite expensive for a bralet when you compare it to the £9.99 missguided ones that I have a vast and ever-growing collection of, but not too bad for a statement mermaid piece. I'm going through a green phase right now so I think this is amazing, and seeing as Ariel's tail is green; I don't think you can hit the mermaid trend any better (unless of course you have red hair aswell).
7. Gold metallic drape front mini skirt £28 from River island
Obviously I have a thing for river island skirts right now let's not make a thing of it. This is a really subtle way to add some mermaid-spiration into you're wardrobe without breaking your budget or going all out with the sequins. The gold isn't particularly mermaid-like, but the shimmery fabric and draped front work really well and afterall, Ariel is a mermaid princess and what is a princess without a splash of gold?
8. Iridescent bodycon sequin dress £18 from AX Paris
If ever you wanted a piece that screamed 'I am Ariel the mermaid princess', then this is the one. The green sequins are so shiny and shimmery and the arrangement of them makes them look just like mermaid scales. The dress itself is my favourite length and the small sleeves look really nice. Plus it's on sale from £45 down to £18 at USC so really, who could say no?
