Met ball 2014: Best and worst dressed
Like many other people across the world, I couldn't wait to see what outfits would grace the red carpet at this years Met ball. The annual gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, is known as the Oscars of the fashion world and is run by the Vogue queen herself, Anna Wintour. I'd actually love to attend such an iconic event one day, but at $25,000 just for the ticket (never mind the outfit), I think I should've started saving about ten years ago. Here is a collection of my best and worst outfits from the event, complete with who's wearing them and who made them.
There were actually SO many gorgeous gowns that it was really difficult to narrow it down. I loved this Jason Wu for Hugo Boss gown, worn by Diane Kruger. The colours beautiful and the style is just so elegant and chic. Pairing it with a box clutch and up hair-do kept the look simple and classy. I thought Emma Stone looked amazing too; she always looks good in bright colours! This two-tone outfit by Thakoon suited her colouring perfectly and the thigh-high split gave it that red-carpet-quality. If only she'd worn it last Wednesday; then she could've worn it for the mean girls anniversary! One of my favourites and all time winner of if-you-weren't-yourself-then-who-would-you-want-to-be is model Kendall Jenner. She is literally flawless and this Topshop mermaid style gown showed off her tiny waist perfectly. The pearly colour also worked well with her tanned skin and dark brunette hair. Another model who looked amazing was Lily Aldridge. The material of this Michael Kors gown is amazing and really flattered her slim frame, and the gun-metal colour worked well with her dark colouring. I was undecided on Rihanna's outfit at first. It's nowhere near as classy or elegant as the other designer gowns that were on show, but the Stella McCartney two-piece was still considerably classier than what Rihanna normally dresses herself in. The backless design and white colour really suited her and the fit was really nice too.
Above all the other gorgeous dresses, these two were my ultimate favourites. The two Gossip Girl sweethearts stole the show as far as I'm concerned. Blake Lively looked every inch the star in this Gucci gown, with its plunging neckline and draping skirt. Team that with flawless blond curls and pink lipstick and you can't get any better. Except maybe if she had Ryan Reynolds, also dressed in Gucci, on her arm. Oh wait. Another of my winners (also my winner of Woman Crush Wednesday for the past million Wednesdays) is the beautiful Leighton Meester. This Emilio Pucci gown is a gorgeous colour and the thigh-high split and plunging neck line look amazing, while the long sleeves keep it classy. Like her Gossip girl character Serena Van Der Woodsen, Blake looks every inch the golden girl, while Leighton proves there's only one Queen B, and it's definitely not Mrs Carter.
Now for the fun part. Just like with the best dressed, there were so many fashion disasters to choose from that it was hard to narrow it down. Contrary to popular opinion I'm sure, I thought Beyoncé made a massive flop at this years gala. This shapeless Givenchy gown did nothing for Bey's curves, while the black netted veil made her look like she was ready to attend a funeral as opposed to an elite fashion event. Karolina Kurkova looked like she was wearing an origami napkin instead of a Marchesa dress. The colour looks beautiful on her but that's where the positivity ends. The skirt of the gown makes poor Karolina look like she's wearing a parasol. Even when Kristen Stewart wears gorgeous outfits, she still manages to ruin them with her awkward posing and deathly expression. And this was not a gorgeous outfit; this Chanel dress looks like something that would be on sale in the Disney store and does absolutely nothing to flatter her figure. And don't even get me started on the orange hair. For me, Lupita Nyongo tops the worst dressed list. And not just at the ball; I think this might be the worst dress ever. The Prada gown looks like it was made by tying seaweed to a fishing net and then draping it round Lupita. Throw in the headband and the bad hairstyle and there is nothing redeemable about this outfit at all. I thought newcomer Shailene Woodley would want to make her Met ball debut in style. But instead she went with this Rodarte dress that looks like it was made by cutting up a sweatshirt for the top part, and using net curtains to make the skirt and sleeves. I don't know what possesses these people.
I'm sure everyone's got their own best and worst lists, have a look at #metball2014 on instagram to see some other people's personal favourites.
