Missguided purchases: Day to night
Contrary to my usual blogging style, I'm starting with writing instead of a picture. Only for the simple reason that I forgot to take a starting picture and none of the ones I've taken will make sense before the writing. So anyway, I've just been dying to blog about my new buys from Missguided ever since the courier knocked on my door, but I've been so ill this week that it's taken me until today to take any photos (my mum reckons I've had glandular fever but I don't know whether that's fact or her paranoia). Through the post this week I got a pink and black palm tree print co-ord (which signals the start of my Magaluf wardrobe), a black and white tartan print bralet and a bubblegum-pink fine knit long-sleeved crop top. I love all my purchases so much and when thinking of outfits that I could make with them, I had the idea for this blog post; how to take clothes from day to night. I had to take the photos indoors, as I probably should've for my Fashioneaster post, as it was so windy outside it would just not of worked. Also please excuse my hair, it's so past the point of needing my roots dying that I don't even want to talk about it.
Being very untrue to my usual self, I decided to experiment with a sports-luxe style outfit. People who know me well, will know that I don't wear flats and I definitely don't wear my hair up, but I thought this outfit would work really well on holiday when it's too hot to have long hair covering you. The co-ord itself is gorgeous; it's the same fabric as my yellow dogtooth one so it's really comfy and the black and pink combination is a timeless classic. The top was £9.99 and the skirt was £14.99, so with student discount on top it was a bargain I couldn't refuse. For this daytime look I paired it with white frilly socks (Topshop £3.50) and white leather converse (£55 from Schuh). I put my hair up in a high ponytail and then added gold hoop earrings and a gold watch (both New look) to keep the look feminine and avoid it looking completely like I'm about to go out and play some tennis or something. I love the style of this top as it shows off shoulders and collar bones; parts of myself that I really like (another reason why having my hair up was a good idea). I disagree with people that say dressing to your shape and figure is about covering the bits you don't like; it's about showcasing the bits you do like.
It's harder to transform a co-ord from day to night than it is for a normal outfit because the only things you can change are shoes and accessories. I started by putting my hair down and swapping the converse for 6inch heel (these black ones are from New Look and were around £35 last October). Huge heels instantly make any outfit more dressed up. Then I ditched the understated gold jewellery and opted for massively over-the-top statement silver jewellery. This statement necklace was £20 from New Look about a year ago (only now am I realising how much of my stuff is actually from New look) and even though it sounds quite expensive for a necklace, it's lasted me really well, goes with everything, glams up any outfit and is still better than half the price of the ones in Topshop.
Clearly Missguided know how to do bralets, as this is the third one I've bought from them. I now have a pale pink one (pretty in pink blogpost), a black one (essential) and a black and white tartan one (all at £9.99 each). I'm a fan of most things monochrome so this one jumped out at me as I scrolled through the 'new in' section. For me this was the most challenging look to create as I always wear my bralets to go out at night, but I figured that adding jeans was the easiest way to "day-time up" an outfit. Seeing as the bralet's monochrome, I decided to keep the whole outfit that way so the bralet would be the attention-attracter. These black jeans are Joni by Topshop and were £36 and I wear them with everything because they're just so comfy. Actually I think I might wear them a bit too much as they've been washed so many times they're starting to look a little faded. Maybe a replacement pair should be next on my shopping list. In any daytime outfit, I think the key is to wear flat shoes. I don't really wear these shoes very often and I can never work out why because when I do I love them. They were from Topshop as well for £50, but I got them on double-student-discount night so they ended up being £40 (a very good deal if you ask me). I did get them a while ago now but you can get similar styles from Primark.
I kept it monochrome for both the day and night outfits to make sure the bralet stayed centre stage. An easy way to take an outfit to night time is to show some skin by swapping jeans to a skirt. I love this skirt from H&M as I think the crossover style is really flattering and a bit more interesting than just a plain tube skirt. I also bought it in burgundy because they were only £3.99 each. If you can buy two of something and still have enough change from a tenner for the bus home then you can't exactly say no can you? I added red lipstick as a burst of colour; I used L'Oreal Color riche in 461 Scarlett crème but you can just use your own favourite brand. I opted for smaller heels this time as I felt that adding massive heels to an outfit that consisted of a low-cut crop top, short skirt and red lipstick might push it over the line into stripper-outfit territory. I've mentioned these heels before; they were £24.99 from new look and I just love how feminine they are. They also add enough height to make your legs look slimmer but not too much so that you bump your head on things (a real and ever-present problem for me who is 5'7").
I think this top might actually be my favourite new purchase of them all. With sleeves long enough so you don't need a jacket, comfy knitted fabric and a bubble gum pink colour that would turn Barbie herself green with envy; its everything I could've wished for. And it was only £14.99! I do believe it's one half of a co-ord, but I didn't buy the skirt because I already have a pale pink co-ord from Missguided so I didn't want too many similar things in my wardrobe. For the day outfit I kept it simple; black jeans (Topshop £36) and my wear-with-everything black boots (New look £24.99). I also showed the option of a jacket just incase. This one is a favourite of mine and was £39.99 from New look, and matches perfectly as the lightest pink in the print of the jacket is the same as that of the top. Just incase this outfit wasn't already bursting to the seams with pink; I added a pink lipstick too. I used a Revlon colorburst lip butter in 050 Berry smoothie (one that I love so much I've nearly used completely) but any pink would work whether that's pale pink or bright pink.
Of all the outfits I created today, this was my favourite. The girly pink of the top contrasted perfectly with the bold tribal print in cobalt blue of this skirt (from Topshop ages ago, I think it was £22) and the lengths of everything worked well together. I added my skyscraper New look heels because the skirt is midi, but if it had been mini I would've worn my smaller heels. I love this skirt because it's so comfy and the length is just right so it can be worn for day or night. I added hoop earrings (which you can't actually see in the photos) and the Revlon pink lipstick again, but a red would've worked equally well. Picture it with a black clutch bag and it's the perfect outfit for a girls night out.
